It was strange how just talking about something that was bothering her helped. Well, perhaps strange to other races. This would have been completely normal on a quarian ship.

“It really isn’t as complex as it may seem. There’s a mourning period in which the ship, or the entire fleet for admirals or very respected elders, and it usually lasts for close to a month. We don’t have the space for burials, so we practice cremation. The ashes are usually compressed into something the family can keep in a small shrine in their living space, a stone or something similar. Or the family can choose to have the ashes returned to the stars. I already sent a request to Shala’Raan to have Father’s ashes pressed into a stone once the mourning period has ended.”

Her voice cracked on the last few words, and Tali had to pause, her hands flexing against the console she had been working on. Just thinking about this was more painful than she had expected. The little bump to her shoulder, however, did seem to give her some strength of will. In the end, she gave a soft sigh, the smallest of smiles audible in her tone.

“We honestly have a very simple view of the afterlife as well. When someone dies, they take their place among the stars with our ancestors. I’m not very religious myself. Not anymore. But it’s comforting to think my father will be watching over us.”

« 🔧 »      “Yeah, well, seems like you’ll be the only one really mournin’ your Dad, Tals. At least ‘round these parts.” She shifted a bit, gave a little sigh. “An’ it’s not because of what he did, either. We just– don’t have the same connection that you did. But we’re upset that you’re hurt. It bothers us, especially Shepard and me. And, hell, Tals. I can take over if you need time. This kinda shit is my specialty.”

Working, improving, engineering– they were what she had trained in. They came so natural for someone who had grown up around machines. If she needed to shoulder than burden while her friend worked, then so be it. Tali had done more than enough for them; she was allowed to grieve the man who loved her so. She was ALLOWED to grieve her only family.

“He is.” She pushed herself off the console with her hip, keeping her arms crossed over her chest. “He’ll always be watchin’ over you, Tals. He promised to build you that house, an’ even if he won’t be here to physically do so, you know he’s up there. He’s gunna make sure you get it, one way or another. He’s watchin’ over you an’ protectin’ you.

“Like any good Dad would.”
